What is an Internship?

An internship is a career exploration experience  in which students are placed at an organization for a defined period of time. Students learn about a particular industry or career by taking on a responsible role as a employee. The internship provides the student with an opportunity to “test-drive” career possibilities, to gain valuable work experience in a field they are interested in, determine how to conduct themselves in a professional environment, create a network of contacts, and earn a school (academic or honors) credit.  Internships may be paid or unpaid.  This is an excellent way to determine if the industry and/or profession you are interested in is the best career option to pursue before investing time and money in training and education.
